FAQ

What are the differences between the different generations of Shelly products?

Each new generation adds more power, memory, and features:

Gen 1 offers basic control;

Gen 2 (Plus Series, Mini Series, Pro Series) adds Bluetooth, scripting, and better security;

Gen 3 improves performance, adds Matter (starting from firmware version 1.6.0 or newer) and advanced monitoring;

Gen 4 offers multi-protocol connectivity, featuring Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Matter.

Can I control the device via Bluetooth?

No, the protocol is used only for device inclusion, allowing for quick and easy setup through the Shelly Smart Control app.

For bluetooth control it is required to have another Bluetooth device such as Shelly BLU Button or Shelly BLU Motion to interact.

Additionally, Shelly devices can function as a BLE gateway, bridging Shelly BLU devices to your Wi-Fi network.

Does this device support Matter protocol?

Yes, it supports the Matter protocol starting from firmware version 1.6.0 or newer. This enables seamless integration with Matter-compatible smart home ecosystem.

What does "dry contact" mean?

Dry contacts (also called potential-free contacts) are relay contacts that are completely isolated from the device's own power supply. Here's what this means:

Regular relay contacts: The switch contacts are connected to the device's internal power circuits

Dry contacts: The switch contacts are completely separate - like a mechanical switch with no electrical connection to the device itself

Why this matters for you:

- You can switch any voltage through the contacts (within rating limits)

- The contacts can break both live AND neutral lines safely

- No risk of electrical interference between your load circuit and the device's control circuit

- Perfect for true 2-pole switching applications

What is the maximum load capacity of the device?

The device supports: Up to 16A for resistive loads (e.g., incandescent bulbs, heating devices). For inductive or capacitive loads (e.g., motors, LED drivers), it's recommended to use an RC snubber to prevent potential issues.

Can I use the device without an internet connection?

Yes, the device can operate solely on a local Wi-Fi network. You can control it via its embedded web interface or through local integrations like MQTT. Internet connectivity is only required for remote access or cloud-based features.

Does the device support MQTT for integration with home automation systems?

Yes, the device supports MQTT, enabling seamless integration with home automation platforms like Home Assistant. You can configure MQTT settings through the device's web interface.

Is it possible to use the device without a hub?

Yes, Shelly devices (except for Wave devices) operate independently without the need for a hub. They connect directly to your Wi-Fi network, and you can control them via the Shelly Smart Control app, web interface, or through integrations with platforms like Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant and Samsung SmartThings.
